Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate how personality based on the The Big Five Model relates to how a hypothetical ideal partner is perceived based on Attraction Similarity Theory and Complementary Needs Theory. In addition to this, a comparison was made between different sexual orientations to investigate possible differences. The method chosen was a quantitative survey study that was distributed online in various Facebook groups. In the survey, the participants answered questions about their sexual orientation, rated their own personality and finally the personality of their ideal partner. The data were analyzed with two correlation analyses, a One Sample T-test, a Paired Sample T-test and an Independent Sample T-test. The results... (More)

The results indicated that the sample preferred a partner with high levels of all personality traits, which correlated with their own high levels of the personality traits; extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness, providing some support for the Attraction Similarity Theory. Significant differences in the mean values in the specific personality traits between the individual and ideal partner provided some support for the Complementary Needs Theory. Regarding sexual orientation and if there was any difference in preferences about similarity/difference, the proportion of non-heterosexuals was very small, which meant that it was not possible to generalize the group's responses. Regardless of the size of the group, there were no significant differences between the different sexual orientations. The conclusion that could be drawn based on the questions was that the sample believes that an ideal partner should rate their personality traits similarly in rank to themselves and that they seek a partner that scores higher than themselves on all personality traits.
