Abstract
In this study, I aim to investigate the representation of Imam Mahdi in two Shiite prayers and one salutation, ziyarat. I aim to do this from a hermeneutic interpretation, a power perspective, and in application of the theoretical concept of objectification. The purpose of this study is to analyse who Imam Mahdi is according to these texts, what the texts say about his personality and daily life, and finally how thisrelatesto general themesin Shi’i Islam. Furthermore, another
purpose of this study is to analyse how the texts can be interpreted hermeneutically from a reader’s perspective, i.e., how can these prayers, salutations and invocations work as a ritual and a philosophy of life on an individual level? Lastly, how can these texts be understood from a historical and socio-political context, i.e., what power dimensions can be observed both in a
premodern and modern perspective and as an expression of a (newly) translated and objectified Shiite handbook literature? To be able to achieve the purpose of this study I have used a content analysis combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Through this method, I have intended to analyse what is mentioned in the texts in terms of macro and micro themes, subjunctive clauses, and adverbials. I have also intended to analyse what verbs, epithets, pronouns, and metaphors are being used in the texts. The result of this study shows that Imam Mahdi is
considered as alive and in constant movement. Moreover, the texts can be used from a power perspective depending on the reader. Lastly, the prayers and the salutation all contain important Islamic lessons but also conceptions of life that a Shia Muslim should practice. (Less)
