(2023) PSPR14 20222Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- This study analyses how psychologists construct “psychosis” as a discursive object, which discourses are drawn from and what subject positions this enables for psychologists. Since knowledge and power are considered inextricably linked, this is also analysed with the concept of disciplinary power (Foucault, 1975/2017). Thirteen psychologists were recruited, and the methods of story completion and qualitative surveys were explored to generate texts about psychotherapy with a client with presumed psychosis. Using a Foucault-inspired discourse analysis, the empirical material produced suggest that the psychologists drew mainly on three discourses: a psychiatric, a psychological and an ethical one. This both enabled and disabled contradictory... (More)

Using a Foucault-inspired discourse analysis, the empirical material produced suggest that the psychologists drew mainly on three discourses: a psychiatric, a psychological and an ethical one. This both enabled and disabled contradictory subject positions: the expert assessor, the expert conversationalist, the protector, the collaborator, and the guardian. It is discussed how psychologists, from these discursive positions, relate differently to clients with psychosis. This appears to enable certain forms of disciplinary power, such as a particular listening, motivational techniques, and transfers to psychiatric care, but also the risk of conflicts. (Less)
