Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
Background: Mental illness among youth and young adults has increased and will likely continue to increase in the long term. Depression and anxiety disorders are among the most common causes of mental illness worldwide. Occupational therapists possess competence in activity and health. This competence can be helpful for adolescents and young adults with depression and anxiety disorders.
Aim: To overview which occupational therapy interventions are available for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 12-29 with depression and anxiety disorders.
Method: A general literature review with an inductive approach. The databases PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO were used for data collection and 11 articles were included in the results. In... (More)

In the data analysis, an integrated content analysis was applied.
Results: The analysis resulted in two categories where the first category included interventions that increased satisfaction with activity performance and contributed to symptom remission. The second category included interventions that increased self-esteem, well-being and developed strategies to manage symptoms.
Conclusion: The results of the literature review confirm that occupational therapy interventions, through the development of skills and strategies for people with depression and anxiety disorders, can reduce and manage symptoms and promote mental health. However, the overview has shown a lack of research in the Swedish context regarding occupational therapy interventions for the selected target group, and thus the authors assess that there is a need for more research in this area.
