- Abstract
- The Orient in Copenhagen: How Tivoli Gardens visualises the Orient
This essay analyses the theme park Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, and its use of Orientalism.
The aim is to understand how Tivoli uses architectural and decorative elements to create an
atmosphere of the Orient, as well as how the park’s visualisation of the Orient can be
understood through a postcolonial perspective. The methodology is mainly derived from
phenomenology as described by Christian Norberg-Schulz in Genius Loci: Towards a
Phenomenology of Architecture and thus there is a focus on how different areas of the park
are enclosed. This study also makes use of the term atmosphere as explained by Gernot
Böhme in The Aesthetics of Atmospheres.... (More) - The Orient in Copenhagen: How Tivoli Gardens visualises the Orient
Böhme in The Aesthetics of Atmospheres. Postcolonial theory is also used, mainly Edward
Said’s Orientalism, but also Homi K. Bhabha’s term hybridity. Visiting Tivoli Gardens was
the basis for the phenomenological part of the study, and a comparative analysis between
Tivoli’s vision of the Orient and the actual visual culture of Asia and the Middle East will be
explored in this text. The result of this study suggests that Tivoli Gardens uses architecture
and decoration with themes that are traditionally associated with the West’s view of Eastern
cultures. The park presents a dreamlike atmosphere, which is reinforced by its use of
Orientalism. The atmosphere is also created through the park’s different areas, two of which
are inspired by the Orient. (Less)
