- Abstract
- The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the implicit aesthetic disposition of seeking to
obtain an aristocratic habitus by acquiring furniture and textiles designed by Josef Frank. By
applying the Bourdieusian theory of legitimate manners and discourse analysis on newspaper
articles, this paper asks whether how the aesthetic disposition and pedantic disposition differ
in manners of acquiring his furniture and textiles.
While legitimate culture prefaces its proclivity toward objects that give a high distinction
profit, the pedantic disposition which is not similarly awarded, owes its lower distinction profit
through acquirement by the dominated classes, i.e., the masses. The question is dissected –

While legitimate culture prefaces its proclivity toward objects that give a high distinction
profit, the pedantic disposition which is not similarly awarded, owes its lower distinction profit
through acquirement by the dominated classes, i.e., the masses. The question is dissected –
when and how the objects were bought.
Paradoxically, seeking to obtain objects by Frank enables the implicit distinction profits up
until the possessors of distinction properties abandon the objects following the acquirement of
the masses. Furthermore, this play on distinction is conflicted by the bourgeois habitus and the
aristocratic habitus but less on the dominated fractions. Throughout generations the economic
fractions have received legitimacy today through the benefits of belonging to an economic
fraction during that time and because of time. (Less)
