- The relationship between state and civil society organisations is a well studied area within the field of political science in the Swedish contemporary political context. While the focus has previously largely been on producer-organisations and their politically privileged position, the resent additional focus has been on the civil society organisation defined by social-movements-oriented organisations, and what role they have in influencing policy-making through formal and informal channels. This study contributes to that field by examining non profit lgbtqi-rights organisations, through the lens of four different theories, with the aim of explaining what factors that defines the reason of access to the channels where these organisations can influence policy-making. Additionally, the theories explain the relevance of the formal channels when it comes to influencing policy-making, and what relevance informal linkages to government officials and public servants might have for lgbtqi-organisations, in a time where the political system is more pluralistic than ever before. The study indicated that the examined lgbtqi-organisations do not have the same privileged access as producer-organisations in the formal channels where influencing could be achieved, but that they still were regularly consulted and valued as experts by the state in policy areas where their expertise on lgbtqi-issues was needed. That it self was perceived to be of great value for the organisations, since some access was granted for them to push and influence the policy in question with their evidence based inputs. The favourable insider-position they expressed having, was achieved by building decades long strategic relationships with informal actors within the state body. Once being an insider, it also reproduced more informal linkages, to get further access when it is needed in policy-making processes or even areas of advocacy work. In conclusion, the formal points of access to the policy process for influencing policy-making, is of high value for lgbtqi-organisations for effecting policies, getting informal governmental linkages and publicly communicating their commitment to working continuously for the rights of lgbtqi-people. However, the informal political contacts compensate for not having access to all formal points of access, especially in the early stages of forming the frames of the policy-making, where they express the informal linkages to be highly effective.
