Design flexibility of prefabricated housing systems

- Abstract
- With the growing global demand for affordable housing, the housing deficit needs
to be addressed with building solutions that are fast to build while less expensive
to operate and construct. As most prefabricated systems are targeted to mess
production, individuality and option for customization has become highly limited.

limitation. In most cases the customer can chose from a catalogue of only a few
design and layout options, where there is very little deviation from.
Throughout an analysis on what’s available currently on the market currently
- based on certain criteria - it has been concluded that the Wiki House system
is one of those holding the highest level of design flexibility. After looking into
what the system can offer and where its limits are, the project is testing ways to
break the boundaries. The goal of this investigation is to achieve geometry and
layout alternatives outside the framework of the existing system. As part of the
investigation, a case study house has been designed where a few principals of
these alternative solutions are showcased. This case study building combines
the regular wiki house elements, custom designed alternative wiki modules, and
parametric façade solutions.
The project is aiming for a conclusion on how far the customization of this system
can be pushed, and showcasing examples on what can be achieved with it. (Less) - Popular Abstract
