- Abstract
- During the last two decades, we have seen a rise of right-wing populist parties in Europe. In Sweden and Denmark, the support for the two right-wing parties, The Sweden Democrats and The Danish People’s party, deviate from each other. This is a theory-testing investigation of Bonnie Meguid’s theory on ’’mainstream-parties’’ and their strategies to meet ’’nisch-parties’’. We conduct the examination by investigating Sweden and Denmark using a most-similar design method. Our units of analysis are, in Sweden: The Sweden Democrats, The Social Democrats and The Moderate party, and in Denmark: The Danish People’s Party, The Social Democrats and The Conservative People’s Party. We examine each party’s election manifesto for each election, and compare them to the election results. We found that the Danish, mainstream-parties have taken over the ownership of the nisch-party´s main question. In Sweden, however, the mainstream-parties did not achieve the same results. We are able to conclude that Meguid’s theory is not fully sufficient – there are several other factors that may affect the party’s election results. (Less)
