Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to assess the extent to which intergovernmental organisations (IGOs), particularly the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), incorporate intersectionality into their organizational and policy documents in relation to Sexual and reproductive health and rights. A content analysis was conducted on ten key UNFPA documents, consisting of strategic plans, State of the World Population reports, and annual reports, in order to assess how the intersectionality theory proposed by Kimberlé Crenshaw (1989) was integrated into UNFPA's framework. The findings show that intersectionality has been integrated into the SRHR agenda to only a limited extent, although there has been an increased use of the term in recent policy... (More)
The purpose of this thesis is to assess the extent to which intergovernmental organisations (IGOs), particularly the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), incorporate intersectionality into their organizational and policy documents in relation to Sexual and reproductive health and rights. A content analysis was conducted on ten key UNFPA documents, consisting of strategic plans, State of the World Population reports, and annual reports, in order to assess how the intersectionality theory proposed by Kimberlé Crenshaw (1989) was integrated into UNFPA's framework. The findings show that intersectionality has been integrated into the SRHR agenda to only a limited extent, although there has been an increased use of the term in recent policy documents. The thesis argues normatively that IGOs, including UNFPA, must take intersectionality seriously in their approaches to (SRHR. It is essential to acknowledge that the aim of this thesis's findings are not to be generalised but to gain insight into how an organisation incorporates intersectionality into its agenda, and the researcher considers it a foundation for future research.
