Abstract
The following study aimed to critically examine the differences in the portrayal of refugees in
Swedish newspapers between the European refugee crisis 2015 and the Ukraine crisis 2022.
Through a critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough's (2010) three-dimensional model, a
total of eight selected articles from Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet were analyzed. The study
found that the discursive practices in the articles during the 2015 refugee crisis were primarily
discourses about refugees as a burden, as illegal, and related to terrorism. This finding showed a
tendency to present the refugees of 2015 in a negative light. Meanwhile, a critical review of

Meanwhile, a critical review of
articles during the Ukraine crisis showed that the most common discourses were those about the
unreality of the war, life before the war, and solidarity. In this case, the articles presented
Ukrainian refugees in a more human and emotional context. The study concluded that these
differences can be explained by the underlying colonial discourse that still lives on in society and
in which refugees were portrayed as 'the others' during the 2015 crisis. It further explained that
this could be traced back to centuries of European domination, which gave rise to the idea of
European superiority. Consequently, the study also concluded that the articles reproduced and
maintained the unequal power relations between the West and the East. (Less)
