- The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the illegal Israeli settlements and extraordinary security measures in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions: How do the illegal settlements relate to the extensive security measures employed by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory? What are the effects on the Palestinian population? And finally, do the illegal Israeli settlements produce security? The theoretical framework used to address the research questions is securitization theory, developed by the Copenhagen School, and (in)securitisation. The findings of this study shows that contrary to the Israeli claims that the settlement enterprise serves security purposes, the settlement enterprise produces insecurity as evident from the Intifada experiences. These uprisings were to a large extent a direct response to the oppressive occupation policies and the confiscation of Palestinian lands for illegal settlements. Lasting over half a century, the settlement enterprise, recognized by the UN as the primary driver of the prolonged occupation, has continuously deprived Palestinian society of security and safety, and more broadly the Israeli population as well.
