(2023) NEKN01 20231Department of Economics
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- During the latter half of the 19th century, Sweden was a poor nation with high rates of emigration. Concurrent to the surge in emigration, the country was industrialized and infrastructure developed, for instance in the shape of railways. Economic theory suggests that the relation between potential incomes in the host country and migration costs determine migration decisions. Such costs need not be of economic nature. This study exploits the gradual expansion of the Swedish railway network as a natural experiment to investigate how infrastructural development influence migration decisions. Using generalized synthetic inference, the topic is examined for 25 Swedish parishes between 1850 and 1870. Data is gathered from church and tax records... (More)

Using generalized synthetic inference, the topic is examined for 25 Swedish parishes between 1850 and 1870. Data is gathered from church and tax records in Sweden’s National Archives. The empirical analysis implies that emigration increased in response to the development, but the size of the relationship can not be interpreted causally. (Less)
