Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The nature of the relationship between personality and social desirability has long been debated. This study examined the individual's tendency to respond socially desirable and their level of neuroticism. The aim of this study was to examine how the correlation between social desirability and neuroticism looked and whether a pressured situation was causing an interaction effect on the correlation. The study had two research questions, the first concerned neuroticism as a factor, whereas the second investigated the impact of the facets of neuroticism. This was implemented through an experimental survey, N=253, consisting of items from the IPIP-NEO-120 personality inventory and a social desirability scale. The results showed that... (More)

The results showed that neuroticism as a factor had a negative correlation to social desirability and that two facets have a more distinctive influence on this relationship. Furthermore, the study established a significant interaction effect between neuroticism and the pressured situation that the experimental group took part of. This showed that individuals with high levels of neuroticism tended to answer in a less socially desirable fashion than individuals with lower levels. However, when put in a pressured situation the individuals with higher levels of neuroticism tended to answer more socially desirable than their counterparts in the control group. The interaction could be attributed to two specific facets. Individual’s differences in self-esteem is suggested as an explanation to the results. The implications of the results create further opportunities for future research regarding the facets of personality factors. (Less)
