Abstract
Previous research suggests that personality and personal values are related constructs with sizeable correlations. However, few previous studies have examined trait-value relations at facet level. Each Big Five trait domain contains several lower-order facets thought to represent the specific contents of the higher-order traits. As a Big Five trait represents an average of its facets, the Big Five can show weaker relations than particular lower-order facets to important outcomes and constructs. To address this issue for trait-value relations, we carried out a correlational study of facets of the Big Five and Schwartz’s values N = 406, sampling via Mturk. Results indicate moderate to strong correlations at the facet-level, with select... (More)

To address this issue for trait-value relations, we carried out a correlational study of facets of the Big Five and Schwartz’s values N = 406, sampling via Mturk. Results indicate moderate to strong correlations at the facet-level, with select facets often driving the trait-value relationships. For example, the driving facet between the trait extraversion and the value stimulation was shown to be excitement-seeking r = .91 (error-corrected correlation). To our knowledge, we are also the first study to report moderation analyses of trait-value relations. We found very few significant effects of sex, age or socioeconomic status. We conclude that facet-level traits may be beneficial for understanding the links between Big Five traits and values. The present study echoes recent calls for more widespread facet usage in personality research. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
