- Abstract
- Psychological safety is defined by Edmondson (1999) as a behavior in which the employees feel comfortable speaking out, sharing new ideas and criticism, as well as taking new risks without the fear of retribution. We have identified two areas in which there are gaps of knowledge and further research is needed: the connection between psychological safety and the wellbeing of an individual as well as the lack of representation of the café industry. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to highlight the participants' experiences of psychological safety as baristas, and the connection to their experienced well-being. The research question that we will answer is: What are the experiences of baristas' sense of psychological safety at their... (More)

The purpose of this thesis is therefore to highlight the participants' experiences of psychological safety as baristas, and the connection to their experienced well-being. The research question that we will answer is: What are the experiences of baristas' sense of psychological safety at their workplace and how are these experiences connected to their wellbeing? This study used purposive sampling to select four baristas who participated in semi-structured interviews. A phenomenological approach was used to explore their experiences, with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis employed for data analysis. The analysis resulted in the creation of four themes: hopelessness, replaceability, high demands, and colleagues. These themes could be categorized into two main themes: exploitation and social relationships. The results presented in this thesis suggest a lack of psychological safety, reducing participants´ will to speak out. The participants describe a situation where the fear of speaking out has led to the decline of their well-being. Social relations at the workplace appear to be associated with greater well-being, but without an effect on the tendency to speak out. (Less)

(More)
