Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the attitude and knowledge of psychologists in regard to transgender and non-binary people, and how it affects their treatment. Based on gender binary and non-binary this was investigated by integrating the main perspective of social psychology with gender studies. This study was a mixed methods design, producing and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data. The data was collected through a survey aimed towards psychologists. The survey consisted of statements based on three scales; attitude, knowledge and treatment, as well as an open-ended question. The quantitative result showed that both attitude and knowledge correlates significantly with treatment. A regression analysis was made in which... (More)

The quantitative result showed that both attitude and knowledge correlates significantly with treatment. A regression analysis was made in which only the latter predictor contributed uniquely to the variance. The qualitative result was analyzed using directed content analysis, with the three pre-determined themes attitude, knowledge and treatment guiding the coding of the data. The results revealed positive attitudes and the importance of respect and consideration regarding treatment. In terms of knowledge and experience, the analysis showed that education and workplaces had not provided sufficient knowledge, which therefore had to be sought out from other sources. Furthermore, the results emphasized the importance of equal treatment and knowledge prior to meetings, but also uncertainty in terms of competence. This study highlights the need for knowledge acquisition to ensure adequate non-binary approaches in practice and research. Further studies in this area could identify how these approaches can be developed to contribute to an equal healthcare for transgender and non-binary people. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
