Abstract (Swedish)
This thesis aims to examine the mechanisms behind the psychiatric diagnosis resignation syndrome and why and/or how it emerged in Sweden in the early 2000s. In addition to this the thesis also aspires to explore the reasons behind why the diagnosis has fallen victim to such a large amount of criticism and suspicion. Through a literature study empirical data, consisting of primarily academic and scientific publications as well as media coverage on the diagnosis, was analyzed through a lens of cultural and social determinism, liminality, and the concept of ‘matter out of place’, among others. Throughout the analysis it is pointed out that the suspicion regarding whether the diagnosis is real or not may stem from xenophobic attitudes or the... (More)

Through a literature study empirical data, consisting of primarily academic and scientific publications as well as media coverage on the diagnosis, was analyzed through a lens of cultural and social determinism, liminality, and the concept of ‘matter out of place’, among others. Throughout the analysis it is pointed out that the suspicion regarding whether the diagnosis is real or not may stem from xenophobic attitudes or the general epistemological uncertainty concerning psychiatric diagnoses and/or categories. Examining the debate regarding authenticity may also enlighten us about the relationship between society, politics, and diagnosis. Furthermore, the analysis shows a tendency for earlier research on resignation syndrome to base its pathogen on the victims’ cultural background, structures in the Swedish society such as the asylum-seeking process or the conceptualization and attitudes aimed towards refugees and immigrants. In this study however, it will be argued that while these aspects certainly play a significant role in the emergence of the diagnosis they cannot, on their own, provide an all-encompassing explanation for why resignation syndrome effect only a specific group of individuals and only in Sweden. Through an anthropological perspective we can instead understand resignation syndrome as caused by the interaction between these aspects of the victims’ everyday life. (Less)
