- Abstract
- This paper aims to contribute to the increasing popularity of machine learning in sports by predicting the winner in a tennis match using classification methods. The dataset used in this study spans a 10-year period and includes ATP singles matches from 2012 to 2022, with up to 49 explanatory variables. Six regression-based models were constructed and tested, all of which achieved an accuracy of approximately 70%, with the random forest model exhibiting the highest level of accuracy. The random forest model was then used as a classifier to predict the results of the 2023 Australian Open men’s singles tournament, and it accurately predicted Novak Djokovic as the winner.
