Abstract (Swedish)
This thesis would like to explore how people who are part of marginalized groups share their experiences through the podcast format and analyze how people, who do not necessarily identify themselves with one or all the groups discussed in the podcast, relate to the information shared by the guest on the platform. Podcasts can provide essential insights into how marginalized groups use technology to create social change. The concepts of intersectionality, otherness, stigma, and mediatization are relevant to the study of podcasts as they help understand how various social factors shape people's experiences and how those factors can interact in complex ways. It is possible to gain insights into how identities are constructed by analyzing how individuals and groups engage with each other and the world through media. For this study, I have chosen focus groups in combination with thematic qualitative text analysis because it allows me to collect results from different perspectives that will emphasize the role of the listeners when studying podcasts.
The results were significant. First, discrimination is a relatable topic for many people because it affects different and multiple parts of one's identity. In particular, the conversation dwells on queerness, discrimination, and stereotypes that still affect people's lives. Second, many participants relate to the ambivalent role of labels, enabling people to define themselves and feel part of a community while putting them in specific categories that make it harder to escape. Finally, from labels, the discussion focused on the language itself and how different languages influence how people view reality and make it necessary to adapt the language to a changing society. In addition, the results show that people often talked about education, and the findings say that the responsibility of educating the majority does not lie exclusively on marginalized groups; podcasts can help, but more should be done. In conclusion of this thesis, podcasts can help to empower marginalized groups: it is a small contribution, but by sharing the knowledge with the audience, some change can happen, especially if taken into action in the offline society.
