The study found that staff working at the youth recreational centers view their work approach as furtherance rather than prevention. However, all agreed that the furtherance approach in turn becomes preventative. Furthermore, results showed that the centers provided free activities which enabled all youths to participate despite their families' financial situation. The neighborhood has been shown to have an impact on how the centers operate thus they meet youths experiencing social vulnerability such as overcrowding, financial issues, and lack of leisure activities in their neighborhoods. Cooperation with police and social services has shown to be necessary for the prevention work and for the center's reputation. The centers enable relationship building for the youths with both staff and other youths which have shown to minimize the risk of offending. (Less)
