Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
Our aim with this psychology degree thesis was to qualitatively explore the phenomenon "termination setback" - a temporary resurgence of symptoms at the end of therapy. We studied 12 interviews with patients who had undergone Panic Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP). The research questions were the following: How did the patients experience their therapy? How did they understand their symptoms? How did they describe the termination phase? And considering this: How can we understand termination setback? We conducted an ideal-type analysis, according to Stapley et al. (2022), resulting in the identification of two ideal-types. The first ideal-type, the "Got Far, Want Further"-type (n=7), was characterized by patients who had... (More)

We conducted an ideal-type analysis, according to Stapley et al. (2022), resulting in the identification of two ideal-types. The first ideal-type, the "Got Far, Want Further"-type (n=7), was characterized by patients who had developed strong attachments to therapy and to their therapist, where the setback was understood in terms of separation and loss. The second ideal-type, the "Wanted Tools" type (n=4), expressed disappointment with the lack of practical tools to manage their symptoms, where the setback was discussed in terms of conflict and deficit. One case did not fit either type and was treated as an atypical case. We discussed some clinical implications grounded in our analysis. The results may assist therapists in better understanding and managing termination setbacks. (Less)
