Abstract
An ongoing campaign has been spreading a message claiming that the Swedish government is abducting Muslim children. The campaign has been portrayed as a threat to Sweden by The Swedish Security Service. Furthermore, the campaign has been described as a threat in the Swedish public debate. The aim of this study was to examine the discourses that characterize the public debate around the campaign, and further examine how relations between different groups in society can be affected based on the polarizing nature of the public debate. The method chosen for this study was qualitative critical discourse analysis with empirical material from twelve media articles and eight parliamentary records. In analyzing our results, we applied the three-dimensional framework, developed by Norman Fairclough. In addition, we applied the theoretical concept of we and them. The study identifies four main discourses in the public debate regarding the campaign: the campaign presented as a lie, a populist discourse, the discourse of flawless social services, and the discourse of the campaign as a threat. The study has found that the presupposition of the campaign as a lie in the public debate has neglected the message of the campaign. Further, the study found that the discourse of the public debate forms part of an increased populist discourse in Sweden. A populist discourse manifested through a distinction between us and them, whereby the group ascribed to the campaign was being referred to as them. Using the concept of diasporic resistance, this study has attempted to highlight the impact a polarized debate can have on the issue of public trust in Swedish social services. (Less)
