- Abstract (Swedish)

(Less) - Abstract
- This report aims to evaluate the fire safety of the nursing home Nicklagården in Älmhult, Sweden. The main purpose of the fire evaluation is to investigate whether the existing fire safety systems will enable residents and staff to evacuate before critical conditions are reached. The nursing home houses both regular elderly care, and a special ward for the treatment of patients with dementia. Most residents are movement impaired and therefore require the assistance of the staff to evacuate. The evaluation began with a visit to the facility, where the building was inspected with assistance from personnel from the local fire department. The evaluation began with a visit to the facility, where the building was inspected with assistance from personnel from the local fire department. Extra attention was given to the dementia ward on the fifth floor, where an interview with the staff was conducted.
The analysis was set up using scenario analysis, where multiple scenarios were identified. Three scenarios were chosen based on the frequency of which they occur, and the potential consequences. The potential consequences were at times given priority over the frequency, as the “worst credible case”-principle was used. Using CFD-modeling and other simulation software the scenarios were then analyzed. The results of the analysis show that all patients can’t be evacuated before critical conditions have been reached. To rectify these problems several improvements has been proposed. These include the installation of sprinklers, fire doors and evacuation stairs. We also propose an increased frequency of drills, systematic fire protection work, rescue sheets and an increased number of fire extinguishers. (Less)
