Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate two methods of detecting a difference in activity between the two hemispheres of the brain when presented with stimulus during memory encoding. The difference intended to be detected was based on the lateralization of brain processing of sensory input, which was triggered by an auditory stimulus in one ear at a time.
The methods that were used for detection, called “method S” and “method SRS”, are both based on summarising energy in spectrograms calculated from the recorded brain activity. Method S used a normal spectrogram and method SRS used a Scaled Reassigned Spectrogram derived using the algorithm Reassigned Spectrogram for Transient Signals (ReSTS). The data used for analysis consisted of EEG... (More)
The aim of this study was to evaluate two methods of detecting a difference in activity between the two hemispheres of the brain when presented with stimulus during memory encoding.
The data used for analysis consisted of EEG signals from six subjects, who each went through approximately 180 memory encoding trials.
The results showed a visual difference in a histogram-representation of energy between the two hemispheres of the brain during the memory encoding for both method S and SRS in all the subjects. In addition, it was found that method SRS gave a clearer distinction between the hemispheres than method S. However worth mentioning is that the observed differences are not yet proven with statistical evidence and further studies are needed to do so. (Less)
