Batteries, green energy transition and energy security in the EU: a critical analysis of REPowerEU
(2023) EKHS34 20231Department of Economic History
- Abstract
- Batteries and renewable energy sources are key to the green energy transition and decarbonization. The EU has plans for green energy transitions and to mitigate climate change, but it is still largely dependent on imported fossil fuels. China dominates resources, materials and technologies for green energy transitions. With the recent energy crisis and Russian invasion of Ukraine, energy security is of concern in the EU, leading to the REPowerEU plan. It aims to shift away from Russian fossil fuels, increase energy security and accelerate the green energy transition. We performed a critical analysis of the REPowerEU plan, finding that energy security was its main goal. In focusing on short term energy security, REPowerEU could negatively... (More)

In focusing on short term energy security, REPowerEU could negatively impact EU climate goals by focusing on securing adequate gas supplies. Batteries were not discussed in the plan, and the absence of a plan for securing materials and resources needed for green energy transitions leaves the EU over-reliant on China, which will negatively impact its energy security.
