Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to investigate primary care counselors’ actions, reasoning, and available resources they utilize when meeting patients affected by domestic violence. The overall goal was also to explore different factors and patterns that arose related to the work and to assess how prepared counselors are in handling situations related to domestic violence. A qualitative methodology involving seven semi-structured interviews with primary care counselors was carried out. The data collected from the interviews were analyzed through coding and thematic analysis, resulting in two overarching themes: “Knowledge on domestic violence” and “Organizational preconditions”, along with related coding. The result was analyzed with the help of the theoretical framework Theory of Planned Behavior, Self-efficacy, and Street-level Bureaucrats. The primary care counselors interviewed shed light on actions they use, and considerations they take when dealing with patients affected by domestic violence. Counselors used their previous knowledge and experience to guide them in plotting the best way forward for the patient. The ability of counselors to act and their practices were largely based on experience, knowledge, and support gathered outside of the organization they currently operate within. Their actions and reasoning were, however, also affected by organizational preconditions. (Less)
