- Abstract
- This paper aims to investigate the topic of education and economic growth in 38 OECD member states in eight five-year periods between 1975–2015. The main focus is to study the relationship of two aspects of education, quantity and quality, to see if there is a relationship to growth. As a quantitative measure, education is measured as the school enrollment rates on a primary- and secondary level. The qualitative measure is approximated as the pupil-teacher ratio on a primary- and secondary level. What sets this study apart from previous research is the inclusion of both the quantity- and quality of education together with two different levels of education. The empirical analysis suggests that the pupil-teacher ratio as a proxy for quality... (More)

What sets this study apart from previous research is the inclusion of both the quantity- and quality of education together with two different levels of education. The empirical analysis suggests that the pupil-teacher ratio as a proxy for quality of education had a positive and significant effect on economic growth in the models including the quality variables. On the contrary, the school enrollment ratio did only show statistical significance in the last model together with the pupil-teacher ratio on the secondary level. (Less)
