- Abstract
- Even though agriculture is the backbone of India´s economy, farmers from various parts of the country are committing suicide. It is not a phenomenon by itself; instead, it is an intense demonstration of the underlying distress (the agrarian crisis) present in the nation for a long period of time. The statistical information provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in India suggests that there is a rise in small and big farmers committing suicide. Thus, this research aims to understand the current situation of farmer suicide in Maharashtra, a wealthy state in western India. The study has followed the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) developed by Thomas Joiner. Through discourse analysis, this thesis qualitatively assesses... (More)

Thus, this research aims to understand the current situation of farmer suicide in Maharashtra, a wealthy state in western India. The study has followed the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (IPTS) developed by Thomas Joiner. Through discourse analysis, this thesis qualitatively assesses previous literature available in the form of research papers, news articles, and government policy documents to understand the cause of farmer suicide and potential recommendations to solve this issue. The author has tried to understand what is still going wrong, find out the explanations for the ongoing issue, and make possible recommendations. The research available indicates that agrarian crises have increased in recent times, resulting in more vulnerable farmers committing suicide. Socio-economic factors such as indebtedness, crop failure, drought, poor government policies, and the absence of social support were the main reasons for the farmer’s suicide. The situation showcases that there are not many investments happening in the agricultural sector, no improvements have been made to irrigation systems, the financial support has been very poor, and government policies, including trade barriers, etc., are inadequate. This research paper represents an analysis of the key findings. The experts have a full understanding of the situation, but the problem continues and hence needs deeper investigations into the causes and proactive measures to prevent suicide among farmers in Maharashtra, India.
