The purpose of this study was to examine disinformation regarding Swedish Child Protective Services in the online forum Flashback through a constructivist perspective with a focus on conspiracy theories regarding the subject. The study is an internet-based study with a netnographic approach. The focus was to analyze the unfounded claims that the Swedish social services wrongfully apprehend children and therefore destroy families. The primary objective was to gain insight into how the users of Flashback construct social services as suspected perpetrators. Furthermore, the aim was to analyze the nature of the criticism that is directed toward Swedish social services. The research questions explore the expression of suspicion towards the social services on the forum and examine the types of interactions used to either support or refute the notion of "the social services kidnapping children." By seeking to answer these misinformative rumors this study enhances how the baseless rumors regarding social services unjustifiably apprehend children are formed. Furthermore, it sheds light on the role of Flashback as a platform for propagating conspiratorial ideas about social services. The findings contribute to a broader comprehension of disinformation campaigns and their impact on public perception of social service interventions. A common pattern in the interactions of forum users is inferior trust towards established institutions in Sweden, especially social services. Users seem to misunderstand the process of apprehending children and the way social services operate. Some users have “trolling tendencies” and their posts do not aim to provide meaningful points to the thread. Populistic standpoints are also common. Conspiracies regarding social services are often posted without substantial evidence. On the other hand, some users post posts in defense of social services containing substantiated arguments. (Less)
