Abstract
Local acceptance is key when implementing climate technologies. One necessary technology to mitigate climate change is land-based Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). In Denmark, earlier experience with the technology ended in shutdown due to local resistance. But now CCS plays a significant role in the Danish climate reduction goals; without CCS the goal won't be met. The academic field is very limited in the case of Denmark but now the technology is at its renaissance with the first land-based location for CO2 storage in the current natural gas storage in Stenlille. Therefore, this thesis aims to study the willingness to implement the storage of carbon as a climate technology of the local people and local community in the Stenlille area.... (More)

Therefore, this thesis aims to study the willingness to implement the storage of carbon as a climate technology of the local people and local community in the Stenlille area. With a hermeneutic approach, the case of Stenlille is studied as a contextual case through qualitative interviews. The locals’ perception and framing of benefits and risks serves as an indicator of their willingness towards the climate-technology. The study concludes that the locals and the local community are positive towards the technology. A broad spectrum of framings related to risks and benefits is present but the ones that are most present are an altruistic frame and a climate frame. The locals are willing to implement the technology primarily considering climate being a societal problem that needs to be tackled. Trust in the authorities and experience with similar technology of storing natural gas plays a key role in the positive attitude towards the technology. The CCS technology is expected to be implemented at a great scale in the years to come. The study contributes to the field by giving insight into how the technology is viewed as a climate technology and important factors for reaching local acceptance. (Less)
Popular Abstract (Danish)
(More)

(Less)
