(More) - Sammanfattning

- Aims: The aim of this study was to increase knowledge about the relationship between speech and language at age of 7 and reading ability at age 10 in children with unilateral cleft- lip and palate (CLP). Methods: Participants were 59 children aged 7 who were assessed with the Bus story test (BST), FONOLEK and SVANTE. From the Bus story test we calculated mean length of utterance in words, grammatical complexity, lexical variation, grammatical errors and the ability to reproduce information based on retelling. Phonological awareness was calculated from FONOLEK by speech and language pathologists (SLPs) in different CLP- centers. Assessment of articulation and an estimate of velopharyngeal function were assessed from SVANTE by SLPs in... (More)

Assessment of articulation and an estimate of velopharyngeal function were assessed from SVANTE by SLPs in different CLP-centers. When the children were aged 10, SLPs tested 56 of them with the sub-test of reading comprehension from LäSt as a measure of reading comprehension. Results: The regression model with the highest R Square value explained 24% of the variance in reading ability at age 10. Variables that made the highest unique contribution were lexical complexity (6,76%) and phonological awareness (4,84%). Grammatical complexity (0,04%) made the lowest unique contribution to the regression model. Conclusions: The results suggest that lexical variation and phonological awareness may be early predictors of reading ability in children with unilateral CLP aged 10. Concurrently lexical variation and phonological awareness explain only a small part of the variance of reading ability. Therefore, future studies on predictors of reading ability in children with unilateral CLP are of crucial importance.
