Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
Previous research has shown that patients in adult psychiatric care are subject to abuse by healthcare staff, where dehumanization and stigmatization of mental illness are seen as contributing factors. This study aimed to investigate whether there were differences between reports to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) concerning abusive treatment compared to reports concerning other treatment deficiencies, based on different characteristics of the patients and caregivers who appeared in the reports, as well as in relation to how the reports were handled by IVO. The study also aimed to identify recurring themes in the reports to IVO about abusive treatment and investigate whether the occurrence of these themes varied based on... (More)
Previous research has shown that patients in adult psychiatric care are subject to abuse by healthcare staff, where dehumanization and stigmatization of mental illness are seen as contributing factors. The study also aimed to identify recurring themes in the reports to IVO about abusive treatment and investigate whether the occurrence of these themes varied based on different diagnostic groups. The study was carried out through coding and analysis of 1039 reports to IVO concerning various forms of treatment deficiencies, of which 207 reports concerned abusive treatment. The results showed that reports concerning abusive treatment were dismissed or not investigated by IVO to a greater extent than other reports. The results also displayed different types of abusive behaviors and overrepresentation of these between diagnostic groups. The study contributes to increased awareness of the types of abusive behaviors that occur in adult psychiatric care. More empirical studies concerning treatment deficiencies are needed in order to better prevent and remedy abusive treatment within adult psychiatric services. By extension, this could improve the treatment of patients who are already in a vulnerable position and strengthen their trust in healthcare. (Less)
