- Research regarding remittances and development has long been plagued by a gender-neutral approach. Consideration is rarely given to why female migrants remit differently. Prior research suggests that female remitters may experience increased burdens and pressure to remit. Media effects theories dictate that the ways in which media is disseminated and consumed has societal impacts and consequences. Through a feminist critical discourse analysis, this thesis analyses the ways in which female remitting migrants are portrayed within the global press. Through a feminist critical discourse analysis, this thesis analyses the ways in which female remitting migrants are portrayed within the global press. Using a theoretical framework of cultivation, agenda-setting, and intersectional theory, the findings indicate that thematically, women as economic contributors, women as caregivers, women as developmental agents, and acknowledgment of female hardships were brought up most frequently.
