Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
Background: Children must receive tailored support to participate and express themselves in their care. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly have a different sensory process, which can affect participation in activities. There is a lack of information regarding how occupational therapists collaborate with children as clients in interventions.
Purpose: To investigate how occupational therapists collaborate with children with autism spectrum disorder to promote their participation in interventions regarding sensory processes.
Method: A qualitative cross-sectional semi-structured study with an inductive approach was chosen. A semi-structured interview was carried out with ten occupational therapists with experience of... (More)

Purpose: To investigate how occupational therapists collaborate with children with autism spectrum disorder to promote their participation in interventions regarding sensory processes.
Method: A qualitative cross-sectional semi-structured study with an inductive approach was chosen. A semi-structured interview was carried out with ten occupational therapists with experience of working with children with ASD and sensory processing difficulties. A manifest content analysis was conducted.
Results: The theme Enable the child’s co-construction and active participation in the intervention cohered to the six categories: Strengthen the relationship, Support influence over the meeting context, Clarify information, Understand the child's experiences and needs, Promote self-awareness and free will and Formulate aims and goals together.
Conclusion: Approaches enabling co-construction can facilitate a child with ASD to active participation in intervention. Facilitating childrens’ active participation may create opportunities for them to reflect on their activities, understand themselves, their doing and development, and prioritize meaningful activities on their own terms.
