Abstract
The self-expression to empower oneself through fashion and dress is a fundamental aspect of personal identity and challenge of gender norms, particularly for non-binary individuals. As gender norms are social norms that may limit a person's choices of clothing and influence on how to express oneself, non-binary individuals may find it more difficult to find clothing that aligns with their personal identity and style, than other genders. Also, the challenge of how to cultivate a personal style without facing societal judgment and exclusions remains a persistent issue. Inclusion is crucial in creating an environment where all individuals feel welcomed and accepted, regardless of how they express their gender identity through clothing or... (More)

Inclusion is crucial in creating an environment where all individuals feel welcomed and accepted, regardless of how they express their gender identity through clothing or other means. By promoting self-expression and breaking down gender norms, we can create a more inclusive and equitable world for everyone. This bachelor thesis explores the social and cultural implications of fashion and the importance of creating a space for all individuals, specifically non-binaries, to explore and express their personal style without fear of discrimination. The conclusion of this study is that clothing is highly individualistic and that it is neither appropriate to make assumptions nor to generalize about non-binary individuals' experiences related to their style and clothing choices. Instead, it is crucial to respect and acknowledge each individual's self-identification and to be allowed to define your own style without imposing any categories or labels. (Less)
