- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to examine and analyze two characters from two different movies, one from the 1950s and one from the 2000s. The primary focus is to analyze how the characters are portrayed and the connection with their performance as dumb blondes. As defined by the theories, appearance and clothes can become a symbol for the representation for who the person behind the clothes are, but the clothes can also identify the person and in a way which creates prejudice regarding the wearer. With the feminine coded clothes and bodies being held to a higher standard of inspection, identifying signs that correlates to the dumb blonde appears to be easier than if it were to be male coded. The identified signs linked to the dumb blonde seems to be interpreted in a way where we culturally have learned a negativity towards the feminine. (Less)
