- Abstract
- Hip-hop has always been controversial. Topics such as violence, drugs, and crime have been reoccurring themes for a long time, and using these topics to depict the realities of their communities is a common occurrence in hip-hop. Topics such as violence, drugs, and crime have been reoccurring themes for a long time, and using these topics to depict the realities of their communities is a common occurrence in hip-hop. This topic is important to highlight because of the lack of research in the Swedish context. Studies have been done in the US and UK, but despite the popularity of gangster rap and hip-hop in Sweden, there is still a knowledge gap to fill. Through primary data collection, the interviews were transcribed and analyzed to find patterns and themes that occurred during the interviews. The focus is on the participant's views, understandings, experiences, and opinions. The theories applied in this study are Stanley Cohen's theory about moral panic, Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of capital, and Lois Wacquant’s theory on territorial stigmatization. The findings of this study showed that the participants felt positive toward the representation of their areas in the music because it depicts an actual reality, whether it be good or bad. They are strongly against the restriction of rap music because they believe that there are other pressing social matters that need to be identified and solved and to let music be music, without censorship.
