- This project named Kursi aims to address the design challenges specific to the moun-
tainous regions of Nepal. These areas are renowned for trekking and can only be
reached after days of arduous hiking or by air travel, typically through helicopters.
Tourism plays a significant role in the lives of the local communities, and the landscape has adapted to accommodate these temporary residents who seek lodging in
the mountains.
Given the limited accessibility to the region, essential supplies and building materials must be transported by human porters, mountain mules, yaks, or helicopters. Through a thorough literature review, I have identified a range of challenges that need to be addressed, spanning from the production and transportation processes to the usability of the final product within the region.
My research indicates that due to existing regulations, production within the region is constrained, necessitating the transportation of goods from urban centers. Financial limitations also impose constraints on helicopter transportation, leading to a heavy reliance on human porters and animals. Additionally, the users of furniture in these regions have expressed concerns regarding the dimensions of the furniture and its aesthetic appeal.
As a result, my project aims to design indoor furniture that can be easily constructed, transported, and aligns with the aesthetic preferences of the region. (Less)
