- This bachelor thesis studies a specific recurring trend from the 1990’s, which in this case is exemplified as dungarees, or as more commonly used, overalls. To understand the essence of this trend and why it’s recurring, a semiotic analysis is applied to the study and to understand the qualitative values it houses, such as social practices and structures, as well as signs, codes
and symbolism, will be used to concretize the correlation between the actual trend, it’s exposure to society during the 1990’s versus today and also, how and why it's still consumed to this day. The background will testament to the history of the dungarees as a utility garment, as well as presenting several platforms and events in popular culture where the trend... The methodological and theoretical framework will have it’s position
within semiotics and will mainly be based on the theories of Roland Barthes and his fashion system with assistance from Gillian Rose model of sites and modalities for interpreting visual materials. The study will show results such as how these signs and codes can be interpreted in relation to a recurring trend via an image analysis and how our social practices and structures correlates with our denotations and connotations.
