Crowding out eller crowding in?
(2023) SOCK10 20231Sociology
- Abstract
- The aim of this paper is to examine, from a longitudinal perspective, whether there is a correlation between the generosity of European welfare states and people's access to social capital. Additionally, this study aims to reexamine the crowding out/in hypothesis on the basis of data from the European Value Survey and Eurostat. Through the use of a means analysis and a multilevel regression analysis, the study is able to ascertain the extent of social capital held by citizens in their respective welfare states and examine whether there exists a correlation between social capital and the welfare state’s social expenditure as a percentage of BNP. At the aggregate country level the study found evidence for the crowding in hypothesis, in terms... (More)

At the aggregate country level the study found evidence for the crowding in hypothesis, in terms of social trust and norms of reciprocity. However, with respect to social networks, the findings provided evidence that support for the crowding out hypothesis. At the individual level, social capital is highest in the social democratic countries and the Netherlands. (Less)
- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
