specific svartkonstbok has been central for the following study. The book is part of the Archive of Originals at The Folklife Archives in Lund, although it was originally from the district of Glava in the region of Värmland. This essay concerns itself with two main questions, as well as three more specific questions which are connected to one each of the main parts of the body of the essay. The two wider questions are (1) which thoughts and ideas are depicted in the svartkonstbok? and (2) how are these thoughts connected to a wider context within the history of ideas? To answer these questions, three themes have been analyzed within the svartkonstbok which, in turn, are connected to the three more narrow questions. These are (1) how did the materiality work within the magical practice?, (2) what was the role of words within the magical practice? and (3) what does the connection look like between the recipes in the book, the folk medicine at the time and the school medicine at the time?
