- Abstract
- The Netflix series Heartstopper (2022) has been praised for its lighthearted and positive queer representation, however, among adult LGBTQIA+ individuals the series has created a sense of sadness. The aim of this thesis is to examine narratives presented in reviews of Heartstopper in relation to queer temporalities and collective feelings. There has not been time for research to be conducted about Heartstopper since the series was released, and because it received a unique response, previous research concerning similar television series have not answered the same questions. The analysis is grounded in research about representation, minority stress and temporality, and as my theoretical framework I work with the concepts queer time (Halberstam 2005), heteronormativity (Ahmed 2004b), and collective queer grief (Ahmed 2004a, 2004b). With narrative analysis as a method I have categorized the narratives presented in the reviews after themes of grief, jealousy and joy. I work to emphasize the importance of non-normative timelines and I contribute to research with an understanding of the tension between positive representation and negative feelings. (Less)
