Although the criticism is coming from both the left-wing and right-wing, a certain political leaning, within the idea of meritocracy, to the right can still be distinguished. The aim of this essay is to trace basic ideological values within the meritocratic idea by examining more closely the view of human nature within both liberalism and conservatism. Through a descriptive idea analysis where Max Weber's method ideal types are constructed the aim is to create a more clear concept of what type of ideology meritocracy is. The results show that the meritocracy’s view of human nature has the most in common with the conservative one, although there are also similarities with liberalism. The results end with a discussion about certain aspects of meritocracy as a concept as well as how it relates to our society today. (Less)
