Green Policies and Politics: An Investigation of Green Parties' Environmental Legislative Performance and Popularity in Western Europe
(2023) WPMM43 20231Department of Political Science
- Abstract
- Green parties are increasing in popularity in many Western European countries. In light of the planet's environmental challenge, this research analyses the performance of Green Parties while in governing positions and what variables impact their support in national elections. By looking at election data for Green parties in 18 European countries from Grant (2021) and mitigation policies from the Climate Change Laws of the World dataset (2023), Povitkina, Alvarado Pachon & Dalli (2021) and party data from ParlGov (2023), the research utilises multiple linear regression analysis to determine the impact different ideological cabinets have on policy output. Using a theoretical framework influenced by Downs (1957), Meguid (2009) and Lowndes... (More)

Using a theoretical framework influenced by Downs (1957), Meguid (2009) and Lowndes (2018), the results show that political partisan factors have a negligible effect on policy output. However, the research also shows how policies enacted by Green parties in power are positively associated with an increase in their support in national elections. (Less)
