The study aims to shed light on relationship building in a professional context within the realm of social work from the perspective of social workers working with younger clients. The study is based on a qualitative method through semi-structured interviews with social workers who meet younger clients in their daily work. In the study, the social workers describe important factors regarding their relationship building with younger clients and which strategies are used for that purpose. The strategies for building relationships with younger clients within the context of social work constitute a main theme in the study. A series of methods that the social workers use to get across to their younger clients can be discerned within the main theme of the study. An important aspect of relationship building involves being adaptable by approaching and responding to younger clients based on their individual traits and interests. Another important aspect of relationship building involves working outside standardized conversational methods and, instead, trying to elicit meaningful conversations by performing social activities together, when given the opportunity. Using “theory of mind” in order to try to understand younger client's mental states and emotional affairs is regarded as particularly important when it comes to building a lasting professional relationship. Finally, the development of a certain confidence in one’s professional competence and ability to handle different situations and conversations is viewed as a prerequisite for building meaningful professional relationships with younger clients. Thus, social workers are able to convey their professional confidence and sense of security when working with younger clients, making an impact on them and building a foundation of trust between both parties.
