- Abstract

- The aim of this study was to enhance my understanding of the effects of digitalization within the Swedish social service department for social assistance, as perceived by social workers. Additionally, the study aimed to explore the ways in which social workers believe that the ongoing digitalization impacts their interactions with individuals receiving social assistance. The two questions addressed by the study were how social workers working with social assistance reason about the ongoing digitalization of their workplace and in what ways the social workers perceive that the ongoing digitalization affects their interactions with individuals receiving social assistance. The chosen methodology for this study involved qualitative interviews, which were conducted with three social workers from two different municipalities in southern Sweden. To analyze the empirical data, I employed a theoretical framework centered around the concepts of normalization and discretion. The study's findings revealed a positive attitude among social workers towards aspects such as reduced administrative workload, time savings, and improved accessibility of social services for most clients. However, concerns were expressed by the social workers about the potential challenges faced by clients with limited or no access to digital services. The social workers expressed that the time saved through digitalization was intended to be used for client interactions. The primary objective of these interactions was to provide motivation and support, guiding them toward self-sufficiency. However, the results revealed that these meetings could cover various other subjects, including aspects related to control and education. (Less)
