Abstract
The publication of the Tidöagreement composed by Sweden's government and the Swedish democrats has encouraged a deep-rooted concern in which ways Swedish society and vulnerable groups will be affected by the said document. Increased knowledge of the Tidöagreement and the way it is composed is vital for understanding the way in which social work will be affected and how vulnerable groups can be helped despite the agreement's suggestions. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the ways in which social problems are illustrated in this document. To exemplify this the study begins by analysing the way humans are viewed, zoning in on organized crime as an example of the way social problems are illustrated in the Tidöagreement... (More)
The publication of the Tidöagreement composed by Sweden's government and the Swedish democrats has encouraged a deep-rooted concern in which ways Swedish society and vulnerable groups will be affected by the said document. Increased knowledge of the Tidöagreement and the way it is composed is vital for understanding the way in which social work will be affected and how vulnerable groups can be helped despite the agreement's suggestions. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the ways in which social problems are illustrated in this document. To exemplify this the study begins by analysing the way humans are viewed, zoning in on organized crime as an example of the way social problems are illustrated in the Tidöagreement and as a result, the way migration and integration are affected. A qualitative method was used in this study and a thematic analysis of the Tidöagreement was conducted. The highlighted themes derived from the empirical data include; neoliberalism, right-wing populism, categorization, control, crime victims, racial profiling, and increased punishment, among others. The results of the thematic analysis were analyzed using the chosen theoretical framework consisting of Löic Wacquant's account of neoliberalism and the criminalisation of poverty as well as Henrik Tham's account of right-wing populism and the punitive turn in a Swedish context. The results clearly highlight the move from a rehabilitating to a punishment-centered political strategy whilst also shedding light on the profound effect the Tidöagreements suggestions will have on marginalized groups whereby they are stigmatized, racially profiled, and shunned from participating in society. The results also show that the idea of what social work is will be molded to be a part of the punitive turn and align with the policy changes that can be found in the document. (Less)
