- Abstract
- This study aimed to investigate how healthcare counsellors experience the on-call assignment. This was done by examining how the healthcare counsellors described their assignment, how they managed it, and what knowledge they used in the assignment. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with seven healthcare counsellors employed at two hospitals in southern Sweden. The analysis was integrated with the result, where the findings were continuously linked to previous research, Hochschild's theory of emotional labour, and selected components from Goffman's dramaturgical perspective. The results showed that a significant part of the assignment involved managing the waiting that came with being on call and dealing with the... (More)

The results showed that a significant part of the assignment involved managing the waiting that came with being on call and dealing with the uncertainty of not knowing the nature of the case until the counsellor arrived at the hospital. Important strategies used included creating transitions to step in and out of the private and professional roles. Stepping into a professional role and disconnecting from one's private self-proved to have a protective function for the social worker when facing demanding situations. Other protective factors included having organizational support and support from colleagues to handle the assignment and
experiencing the work as rewarding and meaningful. The assignment enabled the counsellors to grow both as individuals and professionals. The results also indicated that the counsellors had some difficulty describing the knowledge they used and the on-call achievements during crises. However, after analysis, it became evident that they utilized specific methods and theories. (Less)
