- Abstract
- The substantial growth of private health insurance in 21st century Sweden has sparked debates about its potential effect on waiting times within the public health care system. Some argue that individuals with private health insurance are prioritized in the waiting list for health care, potentially leading to longer waiting times for those without private coverage. Conversely, others argue that private health insurance actually alleviates the burden on the public healthcare system. The paper aims to examine the potential impact private health insurance has on waiting times within the public healthcare system. Using longitudinal panel data between the years 2016-2023, the analysis employed both Pooled OLS and Fixed Effects (FE). While Pooled... (More)

The paper aims to examine the potential impact private health insurance has on waiting times within the public healthcare system. Using longitudinal panel data between the years 2016-2023, the analysis employed both Pooled OLS and Fixed Effects (FE). While Pooled OLS initially suggested a positive relationship between private health insurance and waiting times for specialized care, the more comprehensive FE model yielded a statistically insignificant outcome. The results implies that private health insurance might not directly influence waiting times for a first visit in specialized care and that there could be other factors which influence waiting times in specialized care more.
